Project description:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Research shows that being connected to nature leads to significant benefits such as increased vitality, improved mental health and cognitive abilities, more social interactions and, in general, greater life satisfaction. On the other hand, people in developed countries spend most of their time indoors, including the elderly. Many of them suffer from dementia, loneliness or physical disabilities with reduced mobility. This creates barriers to going out into nature and feeling connected to it. The latter is strongly linked to environmental care and environmentally sustainable behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambition of the FLOWER project is for frail older people to spend more time in nature to improve their wellbeing, health and social inclusion. The project strengthens the nature-related competences of older people and their families and friends (informal caregivers) and provides them with nature-related knowledge, skills and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project objectives:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • To promote social inclusion and engagement of frail older people as well as overall wellbeing and health.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • To Support awareness on sustainability and the importance of nature conservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • To Promote accessible and flexible learning opportunities, while bringing generations together and empowering frail older people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The project will provide guided activities and workshops in nature for frail older people and their informal caregivers and will produce a set of online learning resources with video, audio and other tools (workbooks, cards, games, etc.) specifically designed for frail older people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Facts about the benefits for frail older people of being outside in nature, with tips and tricks to enjoy nature in an accessible manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Creative and meaningful activities to undertake together in nature while stimulating the senses and social connection between generations (e.g. nature photography, leaf decoration, gardening, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • A guide to accessible participation in nature volunteering activities such as the national bird count (in the Netherlands) or a guide to bee identification to support civic participation and a contribution to nature conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
